The Rhythm heart rate monitor is an alternative to chest-strap monitors and worn on your forearm. It uses wireless bluetooth connection to communicate with either an Android or IOS phone, which you must also wear or have in close proximity. The included USB charger snaps onto back of the device. Buttons on the front turn the device on/off, pause or skip music tracks, and adjust the volume of your music.Physically, I found the Rhythm heart rate monitor to be sturdy and comfortable to wear. The strap does not bother me, even after tightening. However, the USB charger is difficult to attach and especially remove. After painfully trying to pry it off the first time, I keep a screwdriver next to the charger now.
The included software is limited in features. It has a bug on the iPod 4 where the voice notifications are too quiet, with no volume adjustment. If you play music, you cannot hear the notifications, which renders the software useless for staying in your heart rate zone. If you are willing to spend a few more dollars, the Digifit application supports this device and worked correctly.
Monitoring is accurate as long as the device is on the "sweet spot" on your forearm. The pulse rate reading it gave me is consistent with a blood pressure monitor and manual tests. It worked well for me during a half-hour bike ride and a one-hour weightlifting session. However, three out of three times I've used it for running, my vertical motion at some point caused it to shift off the "sweet spot" on my forearm. There is no warning or notification when this happens, and rather than reading 0 (which Digifit can compensate for), it gives a heart-rate of 30-50% the true value. This occurred most recently during a fitness test, invalidating my results.
For activities that do not involve much vertical motion such as walking or cycling the Rhythm works well. You can use it for running, however you will need to wear the strap tightly and occasionally check your heartrate to make sure the sensor is still picking up readings.
