Henna (Persian) - Dark Brown (Sable), 4 oz ( Multi-Pack) Review

I purchased this multi-pack to add to another container I had already purchased at Whole Foods. I have very long, thick hair, so the three containers together gave me the perfect amount. This dye is a mixture of indigo and henna. I also added 1/3 cup of amla powder since I have hard-to-color grays. I added brewed coffee instead of plain distilled water, and I used about 3/4 cup of apple cider vinegar instead of 2 Tbsp (to compensate for the addition of the amla powder). I ended up adding extra water, because this is a super thick, coarse mixture. As I started to apply the product, I realized that I should have added even more water, as it was quite "gloppy" and didn't have a smooth, pastelike texture. I sectioned off my hair in 2-inch sections and started applying the glop on the hair at the nape of my neck. I very quickly discovered that this is a messy, messy process. I was trying to be as neat as possible, because I am a clean freak, but it was just impossible. The next time I "henndigo" my hair I will sit in our bathtub and use a portable mirror. Adding the additional water probably would have helped. Regardless, I was able to get all of my hair covered and piled on top of my head. I could not believe how HEAVY the mixture was...I felt like I had a bowling ball on top of my head. I covered my hair with a disposable shower cap and then used an old washcloth to wipe off my neck, ears, and forehead. I then wrapped my head in an old t-shirt to prevent any drips, and I sat under a portable heating cap for about 45 minutes (set at medium). I had read that henna can be extremely difficult to rinse out, so I opted to rinse my head upsidedown under the bathtub faucet prior to getting into the shower. This worked out well. I was able to get all of the "grit" out fairly quickly and easily this way. I didn't shampoo, but I did pile on the conditioner in the shower and then rinsed, rinsed, rinsed. You have to rinse for quite a while to make sure you get all the extra dye off.

The color fully oxidizes after 48 hours, and I am just stunned at how beautiful and shiny my hair looks. I believe the amla powder really helped the color to stick to my grays. You also have to remember that it can take several usages for your hair to really start to absorb the color. I love it! The only modification I would make is to avoid the brewed coffee and maybe add some pleasant smelling spices or essential oils to the mixture. The coffee smell didn't leave my hair for days, and I just wasn't into it at all. Due to the cost of this product, I am also planning on buying bulk indigo, henna, and amla and making the mixture myself. There is tons of information online regarding how to do this, so it shouldn't be too difficult. Despite the messiness and heaviness, I am extremely pleased with this product and my hair looks fantastic.
