And it's easy to use! Each Barefoot Science Arch Activation System comes with a pair of insoles to fit into your existing footwear and a series of progressive arch activation inserts. To start, just pop Level 1 into the underside of the insole, slide them in your shoes and get on with your day! It feels like a mini foot massage, sending waves of comfort throughout your body. That sensation is actually your foot muscles waking up and getting stronger. When the sensation fades, usually within a week, your feet are ready to move up to the next level. It's that easy! With each step, your feet become stronger and more efficient.Barefoot Science Foot Strengthening System - 7-Step Therapeutic Full Length (Mens 10 - 11.5 - Large Full) Review
I have flat feet (aka low arches) and Plantar Fasciitis, and have tried many different orthotics over the years. I've tried just about all of the over-the-counter varieties; and have had several different types & styles of orthotics custom-made for me by podiatrists, chiropractors, orthopedists, orthotists, and orthotic manufacturing companies. Almost all of the orthotics I've used in the past helped me to some degree. Some were better than others. None of them, however, were as comfortable, versatile, or helpful as the Barefoot Science orthotics. I have been wearing these for about two years now (3 pair that get moved to different shoes seasonally), and my Plantar Fasciitis has not bothered me AT ALL since about 3 months after I started using them. They have helped my feet, ankles, knees, hips, back, neck, balance, and stability. And, my shoes seem to be wearing more evenly than they used to (which I never expected, and was shocked to see). These orthotics are very different than any others that I've ever seen and/or tried. They have a concave heel cup, and a large central convex arch support that is oval-shaped (instead of the ramped arch supports on the edge of most others).
Barefoot Science offers several different varieties; but from what I've seen, they are all pretty much the same. The full-length type is MUCH more comfortable & helpful than the 3/4 type; but other than that, the only major difference from one to another seems to be the number of inserts that come with them. The 7-step version of these that I got has a nicer top lining material than the 5-step ones I got; but both types fit, feel, and last the same (to me anyway) once they're in my shoes.
The "steps" refer to different inserts that come with the orthotics. These inserts fit into an oval cavity in the bottom of the orthotic, in the middle of the arch support, and determine how much support the otherwise hollow arch support provides. They start out with a "level 1" insert that is very small & soft; and they gradually get thicker & firmer as the level #s increase. The system is designed to be worn without any inserts at first, and then to be worn with a "level 1", followed by the "level 2", etc. The manufacturer recommends using the orthotics at each level for about a week before graduating to the next one; and using the same level in all orthotics (& all shoes) at any given time. They feel kind of strange at first (and again, when initially changing to each new level), but are extremely comfortable after a few days of getting used to them.
The inserts that come with the 5-step version are identical to the first 5 pair of inserts that come with the 7-step ones. If you've never tried these orthotics, starting out with the least expensive full-length pair you can find is probably the best strategy. This will let you determine whether or not they work for you, without spending any more than necessary. If you like the first pair (and you will), you can move up to the ones with more steps at that point.
Try rolling your foot on a ball (anything from a golf ball to a tennis (or lacrosse) ball). If this hurts your feet, you need these orthotics. If the ball relieves any pain, you need these orthotics. I just wish I had discovered them before all of the others I've been through.
